The internet is full of these films, and it’s easy to see why. “Shibari” is an expression of the female genitals, and its purpose is to express the sacred bond between man and woman.
This kind of interpretation is not the only one possible, however.
One writer for, for example, points out that in many cases, the expression of the female genitals in Japanese eroticism is taken to be symbolic of the vagina, rather than the clitoris.
Indeed, a number of Shibari fans feel that the expression of the female genitals in the films they like to watch is not necessarily symbolic of the vagina, but rather is symbolic of the sacred, mystical bond between the woman in the film and her lover.
If the expression of the female genitals is symbolic of the vagina, it is a shame that the vagina is not actually shown, for the vagina, far from being the sacred and mystical symbol of the sacred bond between woman and man, is instead just a piece of flesh that serves to deliver the baby, when it is time for the child to be born.
Certainly, when there is no such evidence to be found in the film itself, we are forced to search for something in the most improbable places, such as in the title.
The title of a film named “Shibari” would be completely and utterly nonsensical if the title didn’t imply that the film is actually about the penis.
A film named “Shibari” must be about the penis.
On the other hand, if “Shibari” is about the penis, then it is about the penis, not about the vagina, and it is not necessarily about the sacred bond between man and woman.
Certainly, there are films that are about the penis, but it would not make sense to call them “Shibari.”
It might, however, make sense to call them “Shibaru” or “Shibarui,” which are, after all, the Japanese words for penis.
